Why Britain needs a wartime HGV logistics reserve

Britain would need a dedicated reserve of heavy trucks and trained drivers to move wartime supplies through the Channel Tunnel without stripping civilian logistics.

Notes

A long European war would expose Britain's shortage of heavy goods vehicles and trained drivers for military supply. The Channel Tunnel feeds a network that depends on roads as well as rail, so rapid movement beyond it needs dedicated trucking capacity. Britain cannot remove large numbers of civilian lorries from domestic service when wartime demand at home would continue and probably grow. A standard fleet with HGV drivers trained as reservists would avoid a collection of incompatible vehicles, parts, and maintenance chains. Frontline forces can keep fighting only if transport capacity and sustainment planning keep supplies moving.
