The case for another look at 6-inch naval guns

A tentative 6-inch gun proposal seeks greater effect per shell at roughly 5-inch rates of fire, while recognising the reluctance left by the AGS programme.

Notes

A modern 6-inch gun could offer more potential than a 5-inch weapon while retaining a comparable rate of fire. The square-cube law is invoked as a reason to examine the larger calibre, although the proposal remains tentative. The concern is that the 155 mm Advanced Gun System programme has made Americans reluctant to try another naval gun of similar size. Calling the alternative a familiar 6-inch system is jokingly offered as a way to distance it from AGS.
