Why an Anglo-Dutch LHD would take five to ten years

Different British and Dutch size requirements complicate a joint amphibious-ship design before construction can begin.

Question

If Britain and the Netherlands cooperate on an LHD or LPD replacement, when could it be delivered?

Short answer

Five years is an optimistic minimum; about a decade is more credible once design, tooling, and construction are included.

Notes

The requirements quoted in the answer are about 7,000 tons for the Dutch ship and 15,000 to 20,000 tons for the British ship. A shared design philosophy with separate large and small variants could accommodate that difference. Both countries would first have to agree on the design, then arrange and establish the necessary tooling. Building the ships would take at least another two to three years. Five years is therefore treated as an optimistic earliest delivery, with about a decade considered more likely.
