Would placing a nuclear warship's reactors beneath VLS cells reduce refuelling cost?
Short answerIt might ease access, but the explosive risk and unnecessary VLS removal make spaces already scheduled for replacement a better choice.
NotesPutting VLS cells above a reactor could make an access opening easier to create, but it also places explosive weapons directly over the reactor. Removing the launchers is unnecessary work if they otherwise remain serviceable. Accommodation or a combat information centre would be preferable in the proposed design when those spaces were already due to be stripped out and renewed. The arrangement would then combine reactor access with work already planned for the refit.
