Solar panels on rigid sails

A rigid-sail proposal tests whether an efficient racing craft offers a practical model for heavier commercial ships.

Question

Could solar panels on rigid airfoils, like those used in SailGP, combine sail and solar power?

Short answer

The combination is possible, but the low weight and low drag of a racing craft do not remove the much larger propulsion demand of a ferry or cargo ship.

Notes

Rigid airfoils could combine a sail with solar panels. A lightweight SailGP craft nevertheless differs from a ferry or cargo ship that needs much more power to maintain useful speed. The racing vessel's fine hull and low weight reduce the power required to move it. A combined sail-and-solar arrangement therefore does not by itself establish that the same system can propel a much heavier working vessel.
