Why offboarding Type 83 missiles creates a fragile flotilla

A proposal to place Type 83 missile cells on accompanying uncrewed vessels is criticized for separating the principal warship from its weapons and inflating fleet counts.

Question

Could a downsized US battleship program give the Royal Navy a Type 83 of comparable size and capability?

Short answer

Type 83 remains unsettled, and the discussed offboard-missile concept would make the crewed ship dependent on a fragile uncrewed flotilla rather than produce a straightforward peer combatant.

Notes

Some Type 83 proposals describe a system of systems in which even defensive weapons move onto uncrewed escorts. The crewed command ship would then depend on a flotilla for its own protection. This increases coordination and communications burdens while creating more failure points. Counting a handful of crewed ships plus their weapon carriers as a doubled number of independent warships would also misrepresent usable fleet strength.
