What extra displacement would have changed on Type 45

A larger Type 45 would use its margin for weapons and electrical generation rather than a major additional reduction in crew.

Question

If Type 45 had been built at 11,000 to 12,000 tons, would it have used more automation and where would the added displacement go?

Short answer

Little additional automation would be needed. Added space could support more VLS cells and a third gas turbine or extra diesel generator, potentially avoiding the later power problems.

Notes

Type 45 was already highly automated, so increasing displacement would not transform its crewing model. The most obvious use for the added volume would be more vertical-launch capacity. A larger design could also have carried a third gas turbine or an additional diesel generator from the outset. That power margin might have avoided the later need for the Power Improvement Project.
