Super Gorshkov plans and the pace of Russian shipbuilding

A proposed Super Gorshkov is assessed against the long construction times of Russia's existing Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates.

Question

Is the Project 22350M Super Gorshkov likely to be realized, and how useful would it be?

Short answer

Its prospects depend less on the concept than on Russia's slow shipbuilding pace; it may emerge through altered late Gorshkov hulls or arrive only much later.

Notes

The comparison cites 12 years from laying down to commissioning for the first Admiral Gorshkov and 11 years each for the next two ships. Similar construction times would keep late hulls in the existing programme occupying yards well into the 2030s. One possibility is to enlarge the last ships into the Project 22350M concept, described here as more than 8,000 tons with 64 VLS cells. The alternative is that a separate Super Gorshkov design appears only after 2040. These are projections from the construction pace discussed, and a mixture of both approaches remains possible.
