Why ancient shipbuilding methods varied by location

Regional construction sequences are discussed in relation to local flooding, wind exposure and the vulnerability of unfinished hulls.

Notes

Different descriptions of ancient hull construction can refer to different regional practices. Accounts from the eastern and western Mediterranean need not describe the same sequence of keel, frame and hull assembly. Local flooding, tides and exposure to wind are offered as possible reasons for the differences. A hull built early could float as water levels changed at a sheltered site, while another yard might need a different sequence to protect the unfinished vessel from wind and impact.
