Why did the Royal Navy reject the Westland Puma as an ASW helicopter?
Short answerSea King was already marinized, compatible with existing Sikorsky experience, and ready for the naval ASW mission, while Puma fit an RAF and Anglo-French procurement path.
NotesSea King offered a maritime starting point and an airframe lineage familiar from existing Sikorsky experience. Westland could therefore provide the Royal Navy with a helicopter suited to the ASW requirement. The RAF's Puma choice is placed within a different procurement setting. Anglo-French cooperation also included aircraft such as Jaguar and the civil Concorde project. That wider industrial relationship helps explain why the two services' choices need not converge on the same helicopter.
