Why an air force needs competent wingmen as well as aces

Broad pilot competence sustains replacements and gives aces the wingman cover they need, while survivors can become instructors.

Notes

Heavy aviation losses in the First World War forced the major combatants to build mass training systems. A large pool of competent pilots can support the most skilled flyers and replace losses more effectively than a few aces surrounded by poorly trained crews. Survivors gain experience and can train the next generation. Wingmen also provide the cover that allows an ace to attack, even when they receive fewer credited victories. The Thach Weave provides an example of tactics that depend on mutual support.
