Bremse was already destroyer-sized

A design-classification answer shows why similar displacement does not make a training ship, sloop, and destroyer interchangeable.

Question

Could the German gunnery training ship Bremse be scaled into a useful destroyer?

Short answer

It did not need to be enlarged for destroyer displacement, but its existing arrangement was closer in role and character to a British sloop than to a fleet destroyer.

Notes

At roughly 1,870 tons, the training ship was already in the displacement range of contemporary destroyers. The obstacle was therefore not hull size but how the ship's machinery, weapons, and duties were arranged. Its closest British comparisons were a frigate or sloop rather than a fleet destroyer. A later follow-up notes that a larger hull could gain useful capacity because machinery and crew need not grow in direct proportion to displacement, but the extra weight would still have to be assigned to a coherent combat role.
