Decades of V/STOL research became a British industrial advantage

Long-running British V/STOL research supplied infrastructure, data, and expertise that later made the country valuable to the F-35 program.

Notes

Britain treated vertical and short takeoff as a continuing research field rather than an occasional experimental detour. Repeated projects accumulated test infrastructure, engineering data, and specialist experience even when individual aircraft did not enter service. That continuity turned cancelled airframes into cumulative research assets rather than wholly isolated failures. In this account, the resulting institutional depth helps explain Britain's later influence on the F-35's short-takeoff variant, while leadership in a field does not guarantee superiority in every component or design.
