Were defective fuzes the only problem with British shells at Jutland?
Short answerNo. Soft caps, weak shell bodies, premature explosions, and unreliable fuzes all contributed to the failure of British armour-piercing ammunition.
NotesThe defect chain was much broader than faulty fuzes. Soft caps could be stripped away on oblique impact, weak shell bodies could break up, and a sensitive explosive filling could cause premature detonation. Unreliable fuzes compounded those failures rather than causing all of them. Replacing one component would not produce the robust penetrator required at Jutland.
