Bremse as a practical diesel benchmark

The 1932 minelayer Bremse is used to show that Germany could already combine diesel machinery, useful speed, range, armament, and mine capacity in a substantial hull.

Notes

Bremse was launched in 1932 at roughly Tribal-class destroyer displacement, giving the counterfactual a contemporary hardware benchmark. Her diesel plant produced about 29 knots and a 3,000-nautical-mile range at roughly 20 knots. She combined four 127 mm guns, anti-aircraft weapons, up to 250 mines, and light armour in a substantial minelayer hull. Those figures do not make her a direct 36-knot destroyer substitute, but they show that a useful pre-war German diesel surface combatant was technically achievable even after limited development investment.
