Bremse shows diesel need not mean slow

The diesel-powered training ship Bremse provides a concrete German example of a relatively fast, compact vessel whose fuel stowage still limited its range.

Notes

Bremse's roughly 29-knot speed demonstrates that a diesel ship could be faster than the stereotype of a slow auxiliary vessel. Its two diesel engines drove two shafts in a hull comparable in displacement to a large destroyer. Four 127 mm guns and capacity for 250 mines reflected its gunnery-training and minelaying roles. Bremse was lost after interception by HMS Nigeria and HMS Aurora, although the cited sources differ over whether Nigeria rammed her. Her range supplies a useful warning: engine efficiency cannot compensate for inadequate fuel stowage. Bremse provides a technical precedent for fast diesel propulsion, while its specialized roles make direct comparison with a purpose-built destroyer unsafe.
