Brazilian H-class orders and HMS Inglefield

Brazilian-ordered H-class ships and the larger leader Inglefield show how international orders and command requirements complicated the Royal Navy's destroyer programme.

Notes

After Britain declared the treaty restrictions void in 1939, the Royal Navy acquired six H-class destroyers ordered by Brazil. Their lighter battery of three 4.7-inch guns came with an official allowance of 110 depth charges. Cammell Laird built HMS Inglefield, a larger flotilla leader armed with ten torpedoes in two quintuple mountings. Her quoted displacement was 1,568 tons standard and 2,114 tons at full load, with a complement of 175. Within this broad destroyer family, anti-submarine stores, foreign construction, and command accommodation produced different sizes and weapon fits.
