Power-to-weight ratio drives the Bearcat design

The Bearcat combines the smallest airframe strong enough for carrier landings with the most powerful available engine.

Notes

Power-to-weight ratio explains more about the Bearcat than a single headline speed figure. Its designers wrapped the smallest airframe strong enough for carrier landings around the most powerful available engine. Comparisons at empty and maximum weight show that the Wildcat, Hellcat, and Bearcat were closer together when fully loaded. As fuel burned or weapons were released, the Bearcat's lighter airframe gained a much larger advantage. The improving Double Wasp engine and dimensions close to the Wildcat's produced that performance.
