The Bearcat equipped twenty-four US Navy squadrons, served the Marine Corps, and flew with the Blue Angels. Its maneuverability had operational value as well as display appeal, and early jets took years to surpass all of its performance characteristics. That success created a publicity problem while naval aviation funding and institutional attention moved toward jets. Acknowledging that a piston fighter still outperformed the new machines in important respects did little to promote the technological transition. Procurement narratives could obscure a capable system before its practical value disappeared.
