Battlecruiser speed made these ships well suited to accompany aircraft carriers in the Second World War. British carriers such as Courageous, Glorious, and Furious could operate with County-class and other large cruisers capable of keeping pace. In the G3 carrier counterfactual, the much larger carriers require battlecruisers as their fast heavy escorts. That requirement gives Hood, Renown, and Repulse enough priority for all three to receive full modernization before the war. The Kongō class's service with Japanese carrier formations supplies a historical example of fast capital ships filling this role.

Why the Second World War favored fast battlecruisers
Carrier operations rewarded battlecruiser speed, while hypothetical G3 carriers would have created a stronger modernization case for Hood, Renown, and Repulse.
