HMS Lizard tried to delay Yavuz Sultan Selim, formerly SMS Goeben, and Midilli, formerly SMS Breslau, while the monitors sought shelter in Kusu Bay. Raglan's crew hoped the bay would restrict the attack to one direction and let its 14-inch turret cover the approach. Yavuz's greater number of 11-inch guns produced larger salvos, however, allowing the battlecruiser to find the range against a moving target before Raglan could land a decisive hit. An 11-inch shell reached Raglan's magazine, and M28 was then sunk as well. Mines later damaged Yavuz and sank Midilli during the withdrawal. The loss of Raglan and M28 exposed the risk of leaving specialized bombardment and amphibious-support ships without a capable covering force.
