The Battle class as a replacement for large fleet destroyers

The Battle class filled the gap left by losses and damage among large destroyers. Its armament grew out of the Savage trial.

Notes

The Navy needed new large destroyers as Tribals were lost and other large destroyers suffered damage. Savage's trial installation tested the twin 4.5-inch between-decks guns subsequently associated with the Battle design. The quoted tally of 43 planned and 28 built needs care because some build numbers passed to modified postwar Daring designs. The Australian ships formed a further distinction, using the later Daring-style 4.5-inch upper-deck mounting.
