Why Swordfish and Barracuda could not remain leading ASW aircraft

The Swordfish and Barracuda were useful in their own period, but post-war ASW increasingly demanded sensors and equipment beyond their growth potential.

Question

Were the Swordfish and Barracuda good anti-submarine aircraft?

Short answer

They were effective for their era, but later ASW sensors and requirements outgrew them.

Notes

The Swordfish and Barracuda carried effective anti-submarine equipment for their respective periods. Surface-search radar allowed them to look for surfaced submarines and exposed periscopes. Their airframes became less suitable as the mission demanded more sensors, operators, and power. Dipping sonar and magnetic-anomaly detection especially pushed ASW toward larger or differently configured aircraft. Their capability should be judged against the technology available when they served, even though later systems outgrew them.
