Barham's interwar modernisation and its limits

Barham's interwar refits improved fire control, anti-aircraft armament, armor, and underwater protection within the limits of her existing design.

Notes

Barham underwent several interwar refits, including a substantial program in 1931-1934. Parts of the superstructure were rebuilt, torpedo-control equipment and tubes were removed, and the funnels were altered to reduce smoke interference. A high-angle control system and octuple pom-poms strengthened the anti-aircraft defenses. Additional armor protected the turret roofs and magazines, while torpedo bulges improved underwater protection. These changes improved an existing battleship, although there were limits to what a refit could achieve.
