Taiho's armoured hangar is compared with the British Illustrious and Implacable designs. Implacable is described as combining Illustrious-style protection with Ark Royal's striking capacity on about 27,000 tons. A dive bomber must carry a bomb large enough to penetrate the protection around the spaces it needs to damage. Torpedoes attack below the waterline and can admit enough water to sink a ship. Bombs can also cause fatal flooding when they break the hull, while an uncontrollable fire provides another route to the ship's loss. More extensive carrier armour makes the fire route harder for an attacker to exploit.

Armoured carriers change what attacking aircraft must penetrate
Taiho and British armoured carriers make bomb penetration more demanding, while torpedoes retain their ability to cause flooding below the waterline.
