Modern combat systems inside the Burke-class hull

The Arleigh Burke class remains highly capable, but each modernization asks a 1970s concept and 1980s design to absorb the infrastructure demands of much newer computers and combat systems.

Notes

The Arleigh Burke class remains a strong general-purpose destroyer, but its success also exposes the limits of repeated modernization. The concept dates to the 1970s, the design to the 1980s, and the first construction to the 1990s. Computers, combat systems, and their supporting infrastructure have changed substantially since then. Each upgrade still has to fit those new demands into essentially the same hull envelope. A proven design can serve for decades while becoming increasingly crowded and difficult to adapt.
