The modernization limits of the Arleigh Burke design

Current systems can remain capable while an older hull arrangement makes further upgrades increasingly difficult.

Question

Would even Flight III Arleigh Burkes be outdated by 2027 because of limited room for further upgrades?

Short answer

The age and internal arrangement of the core design increasingly constrain upgrades, without a fixed expiry date for combat capability.

Notes

The Arleigh Burke hull reflects late-1970s and early-1980s thinking, with the design finalized in the mid-1980s. Modern equipment can still be fitted, but repeated alterations have to work within existing internal volumes, accommodation, access hatches, and passageways. Those arrangements impose limits on fitting newer machinery and systems efficiently. The concern is a growing constraint on modernization, with no fixed year at which the ships are judged to cease being capable.
