Alessandro Tonini and IMAM's design formula

Alessandro Tonini's focus on aerodynamics gave IMAM a recurring formula: speed and agility with enough ruggedness for specialist service.

Notes

Nicola Romeo hired aeronautical engineer Alessandro Tonini, whose work concentrated on aerodynamics and speed. The enterprise began aircraft production in Naples in 1927 after emerging from Romeo's wider railway and rolling-stock business. IMAM seldom won large production runs because customers mainly approached it with niche requirements. Those small batches could still yield capable aircraft. Its recurring formula paired speed and agility with ruggedness, which suited specialized military customers.
