Alerte had been captured from France in August 1793, grounded, and burned by the British because they judged recovery impractical. French forces salvaged and rebuilt her in December, only for Britain to capture the brig again in the 1799 action. Santa Teresa likewise entered British hands as a Spanish prize in February 1799 and was already serving with Markham's pursuing force that June. Little readily available reference material survives for Santa Teresa despite her role. Together the vessels show how salvage and prize-taking could return recently captured hulls to combat under new flags.

Alerte and Santa Teresa return to sea as prizes
Alerte was burned, salvaged, rebuilt, and captured again, while Santa Teresa joined the Royal Navy only months before helping pursue Perrée's squadron.
