Alaska and the heavy cruiser that treaties prevented

The Alaska class appears as the true descendant of the armoured cruiser and a clue to how heavy cruisers might have grown without treaty ceilings.

Notes

Alaska is presented as the true inheritor of the armoured cruiser and the scale a 1940s heavy cruiser might naturally have reached without treaty limits. In that reading, allowing the older independent-cruiser role to grow with technology and cost naturally produced a ship of Alaska's scale. Courageous, Glorious, and Furious followed a different lineage: their large-light-cruiser label concealed ships better understood as light battlecruisers. Treaty categories and institutional labels can make ships with very different roles appear to belong to the same cruiser family. Under the treaties, the County class became a constrained branch of cruiser development rather than the natural size of a modern heavy cruiser.
