Why did proposed British military versions of the Airbus A300 or A310 never proceed?
Short answerThey were outside proposals rather than an RAF requirement, needed wider industrial support and did not suit British needs.
NotesProposals made around the services differ from programmes requested by the Royal Air Force. The A300 and A310 concepts came from think tanks, manufacturers or advocates rather than an RAF requirement. Airbus's multinational industrial structure also meant British interest alone could not create a programme. Most importantly, the aircraft did not fit the need the RAF was trying to meet. A later follow-up reinforces that a company promoting a conversion to government is not the same as the government adopting it.
