Chapter ยท 33:32-35:16

Refits and elevator changes turn experience into design knowledge

Refits kept the ships useful, while revised elevator positions on USS John F. Kennedy show how Forrestal operations informed later jet-carrier layouts.

Notes

The ships remained adaptable because their size and basic construction left room for change. Later Sea Sparrow installations and altered command-and-control systems are examples of refit growth around a sound core design. USS John F. Kennedy's revised elevator positions show how the later carrier incorporated experience from Saratoga and the other Forrestals. Those changes emerged from testing and living with the arrangement. An axial-deck layout adapted during construction could not fully anticipate sustained jet operations from an angled deck.
