A dry dock for future shipbuilding and trade

Adams's dry dock supported the fleet and commercial economy Ieyasu wanted to develop.

Notes

Adams's dry-dock construction offered a basis for building more ships. Ieyasu wanted overseas trade to increase Japan's income and productive capacity. Military success secured his immediate position, while shipbuilding facilities could support future growth. Red seal ships formed part of that commercial economy. Japan's ability to produce goods gave it opportunities to develop further as a trading centre.
