A-5 Vigilante and the loss of specialist carrier roles

The A-5 Vigilante represents long-range strike and reconnaissance potential that later carrier air wings consolidated into more general-purpose aircraft.

Notes

The Vigilante combined Mach 2 speed, a long combat radius, an internal weapons arrangement, and valuable reconnaissance capability, although its original bomb-delivery system failed. Its removal was followed by the loss of other specialist types, including the Intruder and eventually the Tomcat. The Super Hornet remained capable, but asking one generalist to cover strike, fighter, and tanker duties reduced the air wing's specialised depth. The Vigilante's lost potential therefore matters more than the failure of its original mission system alone.
