Why destroyer standards can overwhelm a frigate design

Using a Burke as the baseline can drive a smaller frigate towards destroyer size through survivability and redundancy requirements.

Notes

The cutter-derived proposal is seen as a chance to reset expectations after LCS and Constellation. The criticism concerns using the Arleigh Burke as the baseline for smaller ships. A roughly 10,000-ton destroyer has room for survivability measures and redundant systems that cannot automatically be reproduced in a 6,000-ton vessel. Requiring the same arrangements risks growing the smaller design towards destroyer size. Designers must use the available space to select redundancy appropriate to the intended mission.
