What the 2021 North Atlantic graphic required in practice

The depicted North Atlantic force requires larger submarine and frigate inventories to sustain availability, while promised uncrewed vessels still await procurement decisions.

Notes

The 2021 review depicts ballistic-missile and attack submarines, Type 26 frigates, River-class patrol ships, aircraft, and uncrewed surface vessels protecting Britain and the North Atlantic. The force-generation estimate requires about three platforms in the fleet for each routinely available, with four boats for continuous at-sea deterrence. Six attack submarines could usually provide two available boats, while nine Type 26s could usually provide three frigates and sometimes four. Britain was buying eight Type 26s, and possible anti-submarine adaptations for Type 31 remained ideas without firm announcements. Uncrewed surface vessels already appeared in the 2021 plan, with their origins traced back toward 2015. Their later presentation as a novel answer obscures the unresolved decisions about which vessels to buy.
