Different destroyer roles complicate the Burke comparison

The destroyer label encourages direct Burke-Zumwalt comparisons even when their intended missions differ.

Notes

Zumwalt was conceived for littoral operations and strikes near shore. Its role differed from a direct, one-for-one Burke replacement. Calling both ships destroyers nevertheless made comparisons of price and familiar capabilities difficult to avoid in public procurement debate. The British Type 26 and Type 31 comparison illustrates the same problem with applying one category to ships intended for different tasks. Understanding those roles is necessary before judging whether the ships are interchangeable.
