A Zumwalt hull could bridge the U.S. destroyer-design gap

The proposal combines an existing modern hull and power plant with mature Burke weapons and combat systems to avoid another prolonged design pause.

Notes

The Zumwalt hull and integrated power system are treated as usable foundations even if the original class did not deliver its intended programme. Mature Aegis sensors, vertical launch cells, and guns from later Burke flights could replace the more problematic mission equipment. Calling the result an interim destroyer would let the Navy build numbers while developing a genuinely new long-term combatant. The recommendation favors accepting an imperfect but buildable combination over repeatedly extending an old hull or waiting for another ideal design.
