After Nubian lost her bow and Zulu lost her stern, Admiral Reginald Bacon asked Chatham Dockyard to combine the surviving halves despite their different builders and specifications. The resulting Zubian was inelegant but effective: she sank UC-50, joined the Ostend raid, and escorted monitors. Reports of the unfamiliar name even led German intelligence to suspect a secret British destroyer yard. The Royal Navy nevertheless withdrew the hybrid in December 1919 because the joined hull was treated as a long-term structural risk. More importantly, the strengthening techniques used at the join informed later Royal Navy construction and helped make subsequent destroyers more tolerant of losing a bow or stern.
