Why accounts name different Ottoman commanders

Accounts can credit either the officer directing the battle or the senior admiral coordinating the campaign, just as fleet totals can include ships serving elsewhere.

Notes

Italian and most English-language accounts identify the officers present and directing the fighting as the battle's commanders. Some Ottoman accounts instead credit the senior admiral responsible for the whole naval operation. He appears to have been absent from much of the fighting, with Kemal Reis leading the action while the senior officer organised the wider effort. The distinction also affects fleet strength: hundreds of ships assigned to a campaign were not necessarily all in the battle line, since troops and supplies still had to move elsewhere.
