Zara approaches a balanced heavy cruiser

The overweight Zara class paired eight-inch guns with real armor, but foreign machinery and Italian speed doctrine prevented the ideal fast fleet wing.

Notes

At roughly 11,900 metric tons standard, the Zaras exceeded treaty limits but offered a much more coherent balance of guns and protection. Their armor made them credible heavy cruisers, though the forward aircraft installation remained hazardous. Two shafts and British machinery limited speed to about 32 knots; adding enough power for the desired 36 knots would make the treaty breach obvious to suppliers and rivals. Britain could tolerate four overweight ships because its global fleet could answer them with larger or more numerous forces rather than one-for-one duels.
