Z-9 and Ka-27 helicopters divide general-purpose and ASW work

The PLAN's use of lighter Z-9s and heavier Ka-27s shows a deliberate split between flexible shipboard aviation and specialist submarine hunting.

Notes

The pairing resembles the Royal Navy's light Lynx and heavier Sea King or Merlin combinations. Both Chinese helicopters could contribute to anti-submarine warfare, but the Ka-27 offered the stronger specialist ASW role. The Z-9 provided a more flexible aircraft for presence and work against surface threats. The Z-9C developed from a licensed Dauphin/AS 365 design. This division shows the PLAN adapting foreign-derived aircraft to its own operational needs rather than forcing every task onto one helicopter type.
