Chapter ยท 3:06-7:55

Why Yamato required a fleet battle plan

The opening argument contrasts the hunt for Bismarck with the concentrated fleet, carrier, cruiser, and destroyer attack needed against Yamato.

Notes

The Royal Navy could not simply repeat the Bismarck operation against Yamato. Bismarck was normally treated as a single raider, whereas Yamato was expected to sail with other capital ships, cruisers, and destroyers. Britain would therefore concentrate its available capital ships instead of scattering them among separate hunting groups. Carrier strikes and cruiser or destroyer torpedo attacks would try to slow and disorganize the Japanese force before the battle line engaged. A tactic suited to one enemy sortie could not be applied automatically to a different fleet problem.
