Yamato and Musashi in the Guadalcanal night battles

At Guadalcanal's extreme night-fighting ranges, even Yamato-class armor would not prevent severe damage from American battleships and cruisers.

Question

What if Japan sent Yamato and Musashi instead of Hiei and Kirishima to Guadalcanal?

Short answer

The Yamatos could inflict much greater losses, but close-range American gunfire would probably maul or mission-kill them as well.

Notes

Armor designed around long-range shell behavior offers less reassurance when 16-inch guns strike at near point-blank range. Washington and South Dakota might also suffer heavily from 18-inch hits, making the exchange far bloodier than the historical action. In the earlier cruiser engagement, Yamato's optics and enormous secondary battery could punish American ships, though the Japanese vessels lacked the later radar fit sometimes associated with them.
