Japan paired a few expensive missile ships with batches of ASW destroyers that sustained fleet numbers and shipyard work. Yamagumo supplied numbers and ASW capability while keeping yards active. Takatsuki combined guns, ASROC, ASW rockets, torpedoes, and DASH drones, then received selective Harpoon and Sea Sparrow refits as hull life allowed. The ships received different upgrades, and Phalanx went only to Kikuzuki. Minegumo continued the pattern with provision for a helicopter that was never fitted, an OTO Melara 76 mm gun on one ship, and ASW weapons across the class. These batches filled production gaps while adding operational capacity and experience for later construction.
