The W-class designs include Thornycroft ships, modified Thornycroft variants and Admiralty developments. Modified Thornycroft armament comprises newer 4.7-inch, 45-calibre breech-loading guns, pom-poms and two triple 21-inch torpedo mountings. The two mountings provide a six-torpedo battery. These ships arrived practically before the Admiralty's modified designs and exceeded the speed expected of them. The Admiralty modified W ships also receive a favourable judgment. One interpretation of their development is that other yards were attempting to reproduce capabilities Thornycroft was already delivering.
