Launch order accounts for the Marksman name in this explanation of Royal Navy class naming. Lightfoot was laid down in June 1914, ahead of Marksman in July, yet Marksman reached the water first on 28 April 1915. Lightfoot followed on 28 May, with completion usually dated 29 May 1915. Samuel White's construction practice explains the very short interval between Lightfoot's launch and completion. Marksman did not enter service until November 1915. The competing names therefore depend on which construction milestone receives priority.
