Yonai's political route to an Allied war

In this alternate timeline, an Allied naval war could give Yonai military success without a war against the United States.

Notes

Mitsumasa Yonai gives the alternate alliance a plausible political sponsor. With no continuing war in China, he could offer the armed forces prestige and victories through a war beside Britain. The old Anglo-Japanese Alliance would provide a public justification for returning to Britain's aid. Success at sea would strengthen a prime minister drawn from the navy and reinforce the moderate faction. His standing with the emperor and his ability to retain authority while governing in civilian clothes would help him pursue that policy. He also consistently opposed war with the United States. Joining Britain early could reduce the danger of Japan later fighting the Soviet Union after Moscow had become Britain's ally. Japanese troops could gain experience in North Africa, although the navy would probably enter combat sooner than the army.
