Chapter · 3:05:55-3:08:55

A shorter war would leave Britain stronger at the peace table

An early peace would preserve more British resources while leaving difficult decisions about Germany and Soviet-held Poland.

Notes

A war ending in 1941 would leave Britain with less debt, destruction, and loss of life than the historical conflict. Britain could therefore recover from a firmer position. Germany might surrender before an invasion of its territory, leaving the victors to decide how it should be divided. If the Soviet Union had stayed outside the coalition, Allied demands for the return of eastern Poland could make it the next opponent. A later war against the Soviet Union could even become the first conflict in which nuclear weapons were used.
