Chapter ยท 3:01-3:41

Writing an alternate history around a Washington Treaty cancellation

The competition asks writers to save a ship or class cancelled around the Washington Naval Treaty and trace the consequences into World War II.

Notes

The exercise begins with a plausible reason for a warship or class cancelled around the Washington Naval Treaty to survive. Writers must carry that divergence through the 1920s and 1930s, later treaty negotiations, possible refits, and service in World War II. That span forces connections among design, procurement, diplomacy, and operations rather than treating the saved ship as an isolated novelty. The ship's survival must have consequences for its own navy and for the historical setting around it. A successful entry therefore treats survival as the start of the problem rather than the answer.
